We’ve all thought about insurance for ourselves, whether it be life insurance, or more importantly, medical insurance. But have you ever thought about your sweet little puppy or kitten (or whatever pet animal you may own)? Well if you’ve ever owned any kind of pet and gone to the vet before then you _know_ that it is not pleasant for the animal and certainly not for you when you get the astronomical vet bill and nearly pass out!
Just like any insurance plan, there are different ones that cover different things but most cover the basics like “unexpected accident or illness.” Most insurance companies that offer Pet Insurance will cover 80% to 90% of costs relating to illness, diagnostics, exams, prescription drugs, and the list goes on.
Typically most Pet Insurance companies will have you pay the vet up front and then the pet owner would send in the receipt and other related documents to the insurance company for reimbursement.
So what types of coverage are included in these plans? Well, we looked at Petplan for example and it BOLDLY claims on its homepage that it covers the following: Accidental injuries & illnesses, Referral & specialist treatment, Diagnostic tests, Cancer treatments, Surgery & rehabilitation, prescription medications, vet exam fees, and yes, even Holistic therapies are covered and we didn’t even cover the whole range of things that are covered underneath this plan.
So suffice to say, you have a lot of different options to choose from at a range of different price options. Value Penguin and Lending Tree have studied various pet insurance options and have concluded that the average price for dog insurance is $48.78 per month with a range in price of $25 to $70 depending on what insurance options you choose and what part of the country you are from (you can look these statistics up by zip code too). The average price for cats is $29.16 and again, the range in prices is from approximately 10$ to $40 per month. That should be enough to get you started if you haven’t heard of pet insurance and remember, keep your pets healthy
